The Heart of Ireland’s Legendary Links Coast

Southwest Ireland is one of the most popular regions for golfers planning golf trips to Ireland. Stretching across County Kerry and County Clare, the area is home to some of the most recognised links courses in the country, including Ballybunion Golf Club, Waterville Golf Links, Lahinch Golf Club and Tralee Golf Club.

The region is known for classic Irish links golf, dramatic Atlantic coastline and welcoming towns that sit close to many of the courses. For many visitors on an Ireland golf tour, Southwest Ireland forms the centrepiece of the itinerary.

Away from the golf course, travellers will find scenic drives, coastal villages, excellent seafood and a lively traditional pub culture.

Sightseeing: Killarney National Park

Located just outside Killarney town, Killarney National Park is one of Ireland’s most visited natural attractions and an easy stop during a Southwest Ireland golf trip.

The park includes lakes, woodland trails and views towards the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks mountains. Visitors often explore the area by walking trails, cycling routes or traditional horse-drawn jaunting cars. The historic Muckross House and its gardens are also located within the park.

Travel Tip: Early evening is often the quietest time to visit, particularly after finishing a round of golf nearby.

Sightseeing: The Ring of Kerry

The Ring of Kerry is one of Ireland’s best-known scenic drives and is frequently included in itineraries for visitors travelling through the southwest.

The circular route passes coastal viewpoints, small villages and mountain scenery. Stops such as Sneem, Waterville and the Skellig Ring offer great photo opportunities and places to stop for coffee or lunch along the way.

Golfers playing Waterville Golf Links are already located along part of this route.

Travel Tip: Travelling clockwise around the Ring of Kerry generally avoids the larger tour bus traffic.

Whiskey Experience: Dingle Distillery

Located just outside Dingle town, Dingle Distillery has become one of Ireland’s most respected newer distilleries and is a popular stop for visitors exploring the peninsula.

The distillery produces small-batch Irish whiskey, gin and vodka, and guided tours explain the distilling process along with tastings of their award-winning spirits.

For golfers staying in or travelling through Dingle, this is an easy and worthwhile visit after a day on the course.

Travel Tip: Book distillery tours in advance during the summer golf season. Dingle Distillery - Whiskey, Gin, Vodka - From The Edge

Traditional Irish Music

One of the great joys of visiting southwest Ireland is stepping into a pub and discovering a live traditional music session. Many towns in Kerry and Clare have live music throughout the week, particularly during the summer months.

Local musicians gather in the evenings to play fiddles, flutes, and bodhráns in an atmosphere that is spontaneous and very welcoming.

Some excellent spots include:

Local Food & Dining

Southwest Ireland is known for excellent seafood and high-quality local produce. Many restaurants focus on fresh Atlantic fish, Kerry lamb and locally sourced ingredients.

Some standouts or popular dining options in the region include:

Travel Tip: Many popular restaurants in Dingle and Killarney require reservations during peak golf season.

Local Tip from Our Team:

Make Killarney town a must stop on your itinerary with lively streets, traditional Irish music on the streets and plenty of traditional Irish places to eat and drink.
